Gays busted at D. C. theater

District of Columbia police invoked the city's archaic sodomy law on February 9 when 15 officers raided the Follies, a gay theater, and arrested 11 patrons and staff members for sodomy. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute denounced the use of the law and participated in a protest the next day outside the city's municipal building organized by several local gay groups.

Activists meet Bush campaign chairman Washington, D.C.-Representatives of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) met with Robert Mosbacher, head of George Bush's re-election campaign, to discuss gay, lesbian and AIDS issues during the 1992 presidential race. The historic meeting--believed to be unprecedented in recent memory--was heralded as a "groundbreaking" moment between the gay activists and Republican political lead-

ers.

During the meeting, Mosbacher, General Chairman of the Bush For President Campaign, was briefed on anti-gay and lesbian discrimination, the Federal Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill, AIDS, hate crimes and military discrimination. In addition, NGLTF raised concerns about the general conduct of the campaign including outreach to the gay and lesbian community, and AIDS-baiting and gay-baiting by candidates.

Plans announced to queer the Olympics or else

Atlanta, GA.--On Jan. 15 on the steps of the Georgia State Capitol, members of Atlanta's lesbian and gay community issued an invitation to lesbians and gay men across the United States and throughout the world to "queer" the 1996 Summer Olympics being staged in Atlanta. The largescale celebration being planned will hopefully attract thousands and is being orgasized by a group calling itself " else!"

or

The announcement coincided with the opening week of the 1992 Georgia legislative session so as to alert lawmakers of the plans. It is hoped that by the 1996 Olympic Games, Georgia will have repealed its archaic sodomy law (oral and anal sex between married and unmarried partners is currently a felony and punishable by up to 20 years in prison) and passed hate crimes legislation that includes sexual orientation. Locally, domestic partnership legislation should be in place and nationally the Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights Bill should have been passed.

AIDS housing money released

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) agreed to free up $50 million in AIDS housing money that has been locked in the Department since October 1991, the AIDS Council announced in February. HUD's action culminates a months-long face-off with AIDS activists over the department's foot-dragging in

writing regulations for the AIDS Housing Opportunities Act. The action came on February 10, the same day as a meeting between high-level HUD officials and AIDS Action Council, the AIDS National Interfaith Network, and the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.

Conservative leader disagrees with antigay military policy

Arch-conservative Congressional leader Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., has taken exception to the U.S. military's policy of investigating and discharging gay and lesbian service members, saying he doesn't "see any necessary reason to expel someone from the military for their private behavior." Rep. Gingrich, Minority Whip and one of the most influential Republicans in the Congress, has made a name for himself as a hardline conservative. He received an "F" on the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Congressional Report Card for the previous Congress.

Texas sodomy law overturned

A judge in Texas struck down the state "sodomy" law, and barred the City of Dallas and the Dallas Police Department from using the law as a basis for rejecting lesbian and gay applicants. The ruling came in a lawsuit brought by Lambda Legal Defense on behalf of Mica England, a Dallas woman denied work as a police officer because of the department declared policy of discriminating against lesbians and gay men.

D.C. enacts domestic partners law despite religious attack

The District of Columbia City Council overwhelmingly passed a local domestic partnership ordinance April 7 in a 10-to-1 vote with two abstentions. However, just prior to the vote, local religious leaders-organized by Traditional Values Coalition head Lou Sheldon--launched a vicious lastminute attack against the bill.

Gays, lesbian join Rodney King verdict protest

Washington, D.C.--Hundreds of protesters, including a noticeably large contingent of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals, demonstrated against the Rodney King verdict and pervasive racism in the U.S. at a lively picket and civil disobedience at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Chanting, "This isn't justice, we're disgusted," protesters marched around the Justice Dept.building then shut down historic Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues, among other streets, for nearly four hours. Demonstrators demanded that the department issue federal indictments against the four Los Angeles police officers who beat Rodney King, and called for an independent national commission named by President Bush and appointed by community leaders to investigate police violence and the King case. Some 275 protesters were involved in the picket and non-violent civil disobedience, with downtown office workers, pedestrians and more activists joining in throughout the morning. Only one participant was reported arrested, al-

tial presidential candidate's "insulting and offensive" comments on gays in the military and in the Cabinet. Representatives from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), Queer Nation-National Capital Area and the Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF) met at the downtown District of Columbia Perot petition office on June 8.

NGLTF fired off a letter to the office requesting a meeting following an earlier press conference organized by Queer Nation in front of the Perot office. During that event, Perot staffers locked out the activists, in the presence of national media, when they peacefully attempted to enter the office to discuss Perot's statements.

On ABC's 20/20 show on May 29, Perot stated he would not hire openly gay or lesbian cabinet members and opposed gays serving in the military. "No, I don't want anybody there that will be a point of controversy with the American people. It will distract from the work to be done," said

Perot about hiring gays. Asked about overturning the military's ban on homosexuals, Perot said, "I don't think that's realistic." Activists at the meeting urged Perot to apologize within two weeks to America's estimated 24 million gay men and lesbians for his remarks, which, activists say, encouraged discrimination against gay people.
